The Department of Arabic, Kupwara Satellite Campus, University of Kashmir, was introduced in 2023 as part of the University’s initiative to extend quality higher education to students residing in the remote and border areas of North Kashmir. The Kupwara Campus became academically operational in 2023 with the introduction of integrated programmes, including the Five-Year Integrated B.A.–M.A. Programme in Arabic.

The establishment of the Department of Arabic at Kupwara is an important academic initiative aimed at promoting the study of the Arabic language, literature and culture in the region. It provides students with an opportunity to pursue higher education in Arabic close to their homes, particularly benefiting students from Kupwara and adjoining remote areas.

Academic Programme

The Department offers a Five-Year Integrated B.A.–M.A. in Arabic, providing a continuous academic pathway from undergraduate to postgraduate study. The programme has been designed in accordance with the evolving academic framework of the University and the objectives of NEP 2020. The Board of Studies of the Department of Arabic considered and approved the integrated Arabic syllabus for Kupwara Campus in December 2023.

The programme provides students with comprehensive exposure to various dimensions of Arabic studies, including:

- Arabic language and communication skills
- Classical and modern Arabic literature
- Arabic grammar and linguistics
- Literary criticism
- Translation and interpretation
- Indo-Arabic literature and cultural relations
- Modern Arabic thought and intellectual traditions
- Research methodology and academic writing

The curriculum seeks to develop linguistic competence as well as critical, analytical and research-oriented abilities among students.

Objectives of the Department

The Department of Arabic at Kupwara Campus seeks to:

1. Promote proficiency in the Arabic language among students.
2. Preserve and promote the rich literary and cultural heritage of the Arabic-speaking world.
3. Develop students’ skills in translation, interpretation and communication.
4. Encourage critical thinking, creativity and research aptitude.
5. Familiarize students with both classical and modern Arabic literature.
6. Create awareness about the historical and contemporary cultural links between Kashmir and the Arab world.
7. Prepare students for academic, educational, translation, media and other professional opportunities where knowledge of Arabic is valuable.

Faculty and Academic Environment

The Department is supported by qualified faculty members engaged in teaching, academic guidance and scholarly activities. The current Kupwara Campus faculty listing includes Dr. Ansar Ahmad, Dr. Farooq Ahmad Mir and Dr. BasharatHussain, all serving as Assistant Professors in the Department of Arabic.

The Department aims to create a vibrant academic environment through classroom teaching, seminars, workshops, lectures, discussions, literary activities and research-oriented programmes. Such activities are intended to encourage students to develop a deeper understanding of Arabic language, literature and culture.

Kupwara is a border district with several remote and mountainous regions.
